NEWS from Clare Raybould’s Suzuki Violin Project in Goa/India: Shining Light

By 09/01/2013Black Board

The German Suzuki Association supports Clare Raybould’s project and invited her to the European Teachers Convention in November 2012, ten days before she left for India. At the convention she reported about her project and how we can help the Indian children with funds, instruments, strings & accessories.

Clare Raybould asked us,
to pass this very
important information
on to you:

We are looking for Volunteer Teachers.
They are needed
for May 2013 onwards.

The Volunteer Teachers should stay 4 weeks or more to give the children sufficient continuity. Funds are there to cover the teachers’ accommodation whilst they are in Goa. The advantage of using Suzuki teachers in this situation is that the repertoire and style of teaching are universal so the children will have continuity even if the teachers change from month to month.

Goa’s slum children

Educators’ Trust India is a small-scale local charity that aims to make a real difference to the lives of children that may otherwise be forgotten. These children with their parents live under plastic sheeting on the edge of a field and, with no birth certificates, have no entitlement to education.

They are, effectively, invisible.

Clare Raybould writes: “Eight hungry boys fed for £1 today. They came in for their violin lesson and we realised that, since school is closed, they’d had no food or water yet today (maybe none yesterday either).”

Clare: “These Children are extremely motivated and cute.”

Guillem Calvo from Spain works together with Clare.

5 short Videos:

First Steps during the first month!

First Twinkle rhythm: ‘Busy busy stop stop’ handshakes!

First or fourth Twinkle rhythm: ‘Busy busy stop stop’ or ‘caterpillar caterpillar’?

Amazing, first try!!

Fantastic New Light boys!

Playing together!
STEP by STEP: E string song

*********************************************

BRAVO!!!

This last video of the E string song we received today. It sounds already very good! It sounds even better than in many European Suzuki Schools. And the children of Goa don’t have parents helping them, CD players at home, and a supportive environment. Of course Dr. Suzuki would have been delighted about Clare’s and Guillem’s wonderful work in Goa.

It is good to see that these children are gaining their first musical experiences with STEP by STEP.
Perhaps Dr. Suzuki can see that this material has found its way to help the basic construction of Suzuki Method in India.

  • Dear Clare,

I am so impressed at what you and Guliim are doing in India.
I wish I could help you teaching there. I had several programs like this in South Africa for about 20 years,

My heartfelt congratulations on this program, that I know Dr Suzuki would have been thrilled about.

    Best wishes,

  • Projects like these really make a difference because they function in the most direct manner, heart to heart. I would be very interested to come sometime to volunteer my services, maybe even involve some of my older students. Can you give me some more details on what your long-term plans in the region are? Many thanks.

    Regards,
    Catherine von der Nahmer

  • Suzuki and music education is so much needed in communities where children need extra support. Your project deserves the most respect. I would love to be involved in volunteering for the project or supporting the program. I would love to receive more info.

    Regards,
    Maria
